Mubarak holds talks in Damascus

President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak of Egypt arrived in Damascus on Sunday for a short visit to Syria. Mubarak was received at Damascus international airport by President Bashar al-Assad. 

 

Vice President Abdulhalim Khaddam , Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara, Information Minister Ahmad al-Hasan and the Egyptian Ambassador in Damascus also received Mubarak, SANA reported. 

 

Later, the two leaders held a meeting at the presidential hall of the airport, then they held a bilateral meeting. 

 

Talks during the meeting dealt with the intra-Arab relations, the current situation in the region and the latest developments, particularly in the occupied Palestinian territories and Iraq, the news agency added. 

 

Talks also focused on the issue of Arab reforms and "putting an Arab project that best fits the Arab conditions and the Arab cultural, economic and social characteristics." 

 

Both sides reviewed the proposals and formulas to develop the Arab League and activate the joint Arab action in addition to some issues put on the agenda of the next Arab Summit scheduled to be held in Tunis at the end of the current month. 

 

Later, Mubarak left Damascus and returned to Cairo. 

 

The Egyptian President was accompanied by Egyptian Information Minister Safwat al-Shareef, Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher, and Mubarak’s Advisor for political Affairs Ossama al-Baz.
