On Saturday, Morocco's King Mohammed VI urged the international community to take "energetic measures" to bring Israel and the Palestinians back to the negotiating table without conditions.

The king wrote messages to US President George W. Bush, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Pope John Paul II, the Moroccan news agency MAP reported.

Mohammed VI called on the leaders "to take the energetic measures needed in order to bring about an immediate resumption of peace talks, without prior condition," the report said.

Even though he said talks should be unconditional, the king emphasized the significance of recommendations included in plans drafted by US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) chief George Tenet and former US senator George Mitchell.

The Moroccan King is president of the Jerusalem Committee of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, created in 1975 to help free east Jerusalem from Israeli control and to preserve its Islamic and Arab heritage.

He denounced Israel's use of military force in response to Palestinian attacks.

In a "special message" to John Paul II, Mohammed VI urged the Pope to "use his spiritual influence and his moral weight to contribute to an immediate stopping of violence” according to MAP. (Albawaba.com)
