Education plays a key role in major global issues such as conflict and peace, economic sustainability and social justice. Arguments about Education for all are often based on uncritical assumptions that universal formal education will help solve national problems. However, there are many ways in which education can lead to greater divisions and conflict.

Professor Lynn Davies from the University of Birmingham, one of BUiD’s British partner universities, explores global education issues in a lecture titled: ‘Educational Development: Feats and Failures from around the World’. The lecture will be held at the British University in Dubai (BUiD) on March 2nd at 6pm at BUiD’s Knowledge Village campus.

Commenting on the lecture Professor Davies said, ‘This lecture challenges typical notions of educational development. It is widely thought that developments in education will lead to greater equality and understanding, however there is much evidence to suggest that these developments can lead more to conflict and violence than peace.’ She continued, ‘Education does not always contribute to lowered ethnic gaps, greater gender equality or the breaking down of divides between rich and poor.’
