Iran's President Mohammad Khatami on Monday called for Islamic states to declare a one-month oil embargo against Israel's main allies to demonstrate support for the Palestinians.
"Khatami in a message to the head of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference called for a simultaneous cut of oil exports from Islamic oil exporting countries for one month to Israel's main supporters," state television said.
The call by the Iranian president echoed a similar one by the Islamic republic's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei 10 days ago. Iraq announced last week it would enforce a unilateral oil embargo, Reuters reported.
On Sunday, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein took a swipe at Iran for failing to take action following its own call for Islamic oil producers to stop exports to countries which have relations with Israel, the official INA agency reported.
"Iran called for a one-month suspension of crude exports. Iraq suspended its exports, but Iran has not implemented what it called for," Saddam said in the course of a cabinet meeting.
"Now Iran calls on the others to donate one month of their oil revenue to the Palestinians. That's good. We just hope Iran will donate its oil revenue to the Palestinians for a month," he said. (Albawaba.com)
