Libyan leader Moammar Kadhafi will visit Egypt in October in a bid to forge closer ties between the two countries, reported the Middle East Newsline (MENL) on Monday.
The news service said that a series of high-level meetings had been arranged for the two countries to discuss strategic cooperation.
The two North African neighbors have often found themselves at odds, although in recent months they have collaborated on a peace initiative to end Sudan's 18-year civil war.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is also planning a visit to Libya, said MENL, without setting a date.
Over the weekend, Egyptian Defense Minister Hussein Tantawi held talks with Libyan leaders that included the prospect of expanded cooperation.
Western intelligence sources were quoted as saying that Egypt and Libya were cooperating on a range of energy and military programs. These include the development of intermediate-range missiles in a project aided by North Korea.
A high-ranking Egyptian delegation participated Saturday in Libya’s celebration of the 32nd anniversary of its September 1 Revolution.
The delegation included Tantawi, Minister of Information Safwat Al Sherif, as well as a number of senior officials and army officers.
Sharif said that the delegation conveyed a message of congratulations from Mubarak to his Libyan counterpart.
