Jordan's King Abdullah II urged the Israelis and Palestinians on Sunday not to miss a "historic opportunity" for peace, as he met with a visiting envoy from Israel, reported AFP.
Abdullah spoke to Danny Yatom, security adviser for Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, of the need "to deploy every possible effort so as not to miss the historic opportunity available to achieve a permanent and comprehensive peace based on resolutions of international law," a Jordanian official told the agency.
The king also called for "an end to the Palestinian people's suffering and end to (Israeli) aggression and the lifting of the blockade" on Palestinian towns.
Israeli embassy spokesman Roey Gilad told AFP the visit "shows Israel's eagerness to inform Jordan regularly and in detail on the latest developments in the peace talks."
Yatom's trip came hours after a meeting between Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and former Israeli prime minister Shimon Peres.
Their meeting failed to yield progress, but more talks between the two sides were planned in the coming days, according to Israeli press reports.
Yatom has made several visits to Jordan and Egypt, the two countries that have signed a peace treaty with Israel -- Albawaba.com
