Jordan Telecom Buys Country's Main ISP

Jordan Telecom on Sunday sealed a deal to buy the country's main Internet service provider (ISP), Global One, for $12.8 million, a statement by the company said. 

According to the statement, the deal gives Jordan Telecom "100 percent ownership of Global One, which becomes an official subsidiary of Jordan Telecom with a 60 percent market share of Internet users in the kingdom."  

"By including Global One under the Jordan Telecom umbrella, Jordan Telecom will play a major role in providing the Internet services at a level equal to international standards based on the information technology network that Jordan Telecom is currently setting up," Jordan Telecom chairman Shabib Ammari said at the signing ceremony.  

France Telecom is Jordan Telecom's strategic partner, having bought 40 percent of its stock in January 2000. Earlier this year it pledged to upgrade and improve the Internet service in the kingdom – Albawaba.com
