Jordan's King Abdullah II, President of Egypt and Syria, Hosni Mubarak and Bashar Assad, will inaugurate on Wednesday a trilateral electricity network in Damascus, said reports.
The official Lebanese agency reported that Prime Minster Rafiq Hariri will also attend the inauguration ceremony.
The project includes the establishment of a 187-kilometer line that will link the Jordanian electricity station in Shafa Badran, north of Amman, with Dair Ali station near Damascus, according to the Jordan Times newspaper.
The Jordan-Syria linkup is part of the electricity project grouping also Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq.
In March 1999, King Abdullah and President Mubarak inaugurated the first phase of network which was linked by an underwater cable as part of the project launched in 1996 aimed at connecting the grids of the six states.
According to a Jordanian official, the Syrian part of the project cost $115 million compared to the $30 million it cost to set up the network in Jordanian territory.
The official said that the project was financed by the Kuwait-based Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development.
He said the Egypt-Jordan-Syria electricity network will be linked to Turkey by the end of this year and with Lebanon in April 2002 – Albawaba.com
