EU foreign minister chief Javier Solana met in Brussels Tuesday the visiting Jordanian King Abdullah II, and discussed with him the Middle East peace process impasse.

Tuesday’s meeting, according to KUNA, was to “ensure that both sides keep in touch” and “continue to work” to launch an international diplomatic path to renew the peace process, Christina Gallach, Solana's spokesperson said.

She added that Amman, which is committed to a peace treaty with Israel, "is a very active player in the region ... the efforts of Jordan and the EU will continue."

The Jordanian King’s agenda includes meetings with European Commission president Romano Prodi, European parliament president Pat Cox and NATO secretary general Lord Robertson.

Solana told the King that he had telephoned Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher following the Egyptian President’s trip to Washington, over the results of the US-Egyptian summit, KUNA added.

"The (Mid-East) situation is very difficult," Gallach said, therefore the EU "tries to organize a political initiative" to re-launch the peace process. (albawaba.com)
