A female Jewish settler was hit by Palestinian gunfire while driving in a car in the Jordan Valley early Monday, and died soon after of her wounds, according to an Israeli military source.
The woman was 24 years old, the source said, cited by Haaretz newspaper.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian news agency, WAFA, reported that a Palestinian man died of wounds he sustained late last month from Israeli gunfire in the Gaza Strip.
It said that Nasrallah Jaghon, 23, died late Sunday of wound he suffered late last month by Israeli gunfire in Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip.
His death brings to 821 the number of people killed since the Intifada, or Palestinian uprising, began in September of last year. Of these, 629 were Palestinians and 169 were Israelis, according to AFP’s estimates.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Sunday vetoed a long-awaited meeting aimed at relaunching the peace process between his Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, saying 48 hours of calm was needed before the talks could be held.
The United States pressured both sides to declare a ceasefire last week as it attempted to calm regional tension to pave the way for Arab participation in its campaign against world terrorism.
According to Haaretz, firing continued Sunday night in the territories, but most of the day was quiet.
Until 8:00am Sunday, there were nine shooting incidents and the fire stopped until 8:00pm, claimed the paper.
Shots were fired in Rafah and near the settlement of Ofra north of Ramllah. Later, five grenades and several molotov cocktails were thrown at an Israeli army post near Neveh Dekalim.
