Italian police detained 60 people Tuesday in a major swoop on extreme-leftist groups suspected of links to terrorism, police sources said.
Searches were made at some 100 premises in a dozen towns across Italy, including Milan, Turin, Pisa and Florence and on the island of Sardinia.
The Milan prosecutor's office was in charge of the swoop on the "International Solidarity" movement which was suspected of involvement in plans to attack targets in Milan, the police sources said.
The Italian dailies La Stampa and La Repubblica meanwhile reported that French and Italian police had detained three Afghans and an Iranian, all travelling on bogus visas, at the weekend.
Police said they found detailed maps of Brussels, headquarters of the European Union, where an EU summit is scheduled at the end of the week, in the suspects' luggage.
The four had been travelling together but split up to cross the border, with their final destination said to be Poland. Two were picked up in Ventimiglia and two in Nice, the reports indicated -- ROME (AFP)
