An Italian aid worker was killed Saturday during an apparent robbery in Kigali, police said.

"The victim was attacked by two men on Saturday morning around 6:15 am," said police spokesman Tony Kuramba.

Italian sources here gave the victim's name as 60-year-old Juliano Berizzi.

"An unknown amount of money was stolen. Investigations are under way to identify and find the culprits," Kuramba added.

"At around 6:00 am I heard screams coming from the next house, then the sound of a gun going off," said a neighbor in the Gatenga district of the capital.

"I went to see ten minutes later, and found [the Italian] shot dead," said the neighbor.

The Italian worked in a center for disadvantaged children in the district and had arrived in Rwanda three weeks ago -- KIGALI (AFP)
