Israeli warplanes fired missiles at Palestinian security targets in the Jabalya refugee camp and in Beit Lahiyah in the Gaza Strip on Friday evening. According to Palestinian sources, a police lieutenant was killed and 32 persons were injured in the attack.
A Palestinian security official said an F-16 warplane fired three missiles at Palestinian General Security headquarters in Jabalya refugee camp. A witness said two bombs were dropped on the facility.
The strike was launched a day after a Palestinian bomb blew up an Israeli tank in the Gaza Strip, killing three soldiers.
Senior Commander Killed
Meanwhile, the commander of the elite Israeli Duvdevan unit, Lieutenant Colonel Eyal Weiss, 34, was killed Friday morning during an Israeli operation in the West Bank village of Saida, located in a Palestinian Authority-controlled area close to the West Bank city of Tulkarem.
Weiss led Israeli troops on a manhunt for Palestinian operatives in the village. Five Tanzim and Islamic Jihad activists were arrested Thursday night. The head of Islamic Jihad in the region, Jasser Ghdad, barricaded himself in his home and exchanged fire with the troops, Haaretz reported. An Israeli soldier was lightly wounded by shrapnel during the gunbattle. After Ghdad refused to surrender, an Israeli bulldozer began to destroy the house, causing Ghdad to hand over his weapons and give himself up.
Weiss interrogated Ghdad on the other side of the road, behind a concrete wall. The bulldozer continued to demolish the house, about 20 meters from where Weiss was standing, when a part of the house was flung to the other side of the road, hit the concrete wall and caused parts of the wall to collapse on Weiss, who was killed immediately.
