Israel's armed forces chief is cutting short a trip to the United States to return home, amid heightened tensions on both the Lebanese and Palestinian fronts, said Haaretz newspaper.
The chief of the general staff, General Shaul Mofaz, "will complete his program of meetings with senior US military officials and return immediately to Israel," a military statement said, cited by the paper.
It did not specify a reason, but on Sunday Israeli warplanes destroyed a Syrian radar station in Lebanon following an attack by Lebanese Hizbollah fighters, triggering a new Hizbollah bombardment.
Mofaz went to the United States on Friday for what was planned to be a week-long trip including meetings with top military brass, Secretary of State Colin Powell and Jewish leaders – Albawaba.com
