ALBAWABA - Israel was warned by United Nations Security Council members over its planned law that would lead to curbing the work of the UN's Palestinian Refugees Agency (UNRWA).
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that Israel is seeking two bills which could put a "halt to the lifesaving operations of UNRWA." He also added that UNRWA's work has been indispensable and irreplaceable “more than ever” over the past year of war in Gaza.
"it would be a catastrophe in what is already an unmitigated disaster," Guterres continued.
During the year of war in Gaza, the Israeli authorities targeted UN schools and employees and claimed that some UNRWA workers were members of Hamas to "justify" attacks.
The Knesset approved two bills on Sunday which could lead to the end of UNRWA's role which operates in Gaza and occupied Palestinian areas.
US envoy to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said Wednesday the US government is not happy and is deeply concerned with the UNRWA bill introduced by Israel.
Thomas-Greenfield added Israel's bill risked "hindering its ability to communicate with Israeli officials and removing privileges and immunities afforded to UN organizations and personnel around the globe."
Algeria meanwhile noted that Israel has been planning and desiring for so long "to dismantle UNRWA."
