Jordan condemned Israeli escalation Monday after an Israeli minister visited the Al Aqsa compound in Jerusalem. Jordan warned that the visit could cause more violence at the holy site.
The Israeli Housing Minister Uri Ariel visited the plaza briefly on Sunday. Shortly after Ariel’s visit, there was a confrontation between Palestinian youth and Israeli police officers.
“Jordan rejects Israeli escalation in al Aqsa as well as measures that allow radicals to violate al Aqsa under protection of police and occupation forces,” said Minister of Information Mohammad Momani. He added, “These actions will lead to more violence and religious extremism in the region. Jordan warns Israel not to try to impose anything new related to al Aqsa.”
Earlier this week Israeli police forcefully dispersed a Palestinian protest at al Aqsa.
Jordan is the custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem under the 1994 Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty.
