Israeli President Moshe Katzav called Wednesday on the governments of Jordan and Egypt to return their ambassadors to Israel, reported Haaretz newspaper, quoting Israel Radio.
Katzav made the call while speaking to the US Conference of Presidents which met in Jerusalem, said the report.
Katzav said that even today, Israel is willing to make major strategic compromises for peace.
Egypt recalled its ambassador, Mohammed Bassyouni, following Israel’s bombardment of Palestinian Authority targets in Gaza and the West Bank in October.
On Tuesday, officials said that Egypt is not considering sending back its ambassador to Tel Aviv because of the Jewish state's continued aggression against the Palestinians, according to the Iranian News Agency (IRNA).
"It was ruled out that Bassyouni will return to his post now," an official said.
Jordan, the other Arab country to have signed a peace treaty with Israel, has since October suspended the return of its envoy to Tel Aviv. The decision was also taken on grounds of Israeli practices against the Palestinians - Albawaba.com
