Israeli forces killed a member of the Islamic Jihad Saturday morning near the West Bank village of Silat a Hartiyeh close to Jenin. Abed al-Hady Zeyud, 21, was shot dead after about a dozen Israeli jeeps and tanks entered the village to arrest him and clashed with stone-throwers, Palestinian medical sources and an Islamic Jihad spokesman said.

Earlier in the West Bank, a Palestinian teenager was critically wounded by Israeli gunfire in Tulkarem, Palestinian witnesses and medical sources said.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan called on the Israeli government to show more restraint after gunbattles between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians in a Gaza Strip refugee camp, where 10 people including two employees of the UN Relief and Works Agency, a spokesman said.

Reports quoted Annan as saying he was "gravely concerned" by the Israeli attack on al-Bureij refugee camp early Friday morning, especially since it fell during Eid al-Fitr.

Reports quoted UN chief spokesman Fred Eckhard as saying Annan "deplores the loss of innocent civilian life. He has repeatedly urged Israel to refrain from the excessive and disproportionate use of deadly force in civilian areas."

Annan, according to Eckhard, "wishes to remind the government of Israel of its obligations as an occupying power to protect the civilian population, and urges them to ensure that the Israeli forces behave with greater restraint and discipline and in conformity with international humanitarian law."

As the Palestinians buried their dead Friday, crowds of angry men vowed revenge. "We are committed to the continuation of jihad (holy war) and martyr operations until our land is liberated," members of Hamas, which lost two members of their armed wing and four members of their political section in the raid, shouted through loudspeakers at the cemetery.
