At least 36 people on Monday were killed and over 100 wounded after attacks in across Iraq, which mainly targeted police forces.
A group of gunmen launched a bold assault on a Baghdad police station just before dawn on Monday, killing at least eight policemen and one baby, officials said. At least 23 were injured, according to The AP. The attack on the Baya police station in southwestern Baghdad started just before dawn and included at least three car bombs, rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire, police Captain Talib Thamir said.
An eight-month-old baby was also killed in this attack and a police major general was among the wounded. At least five police vehicles were completely destroyed. At least one Iraqi policeman was missing.
Later, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a traffic police headquarters in the Kurdish city of Irbil, killing at least 15 and wounding over 100 more, police said.
In this attack, the bomber disguised himself as a policeman amid a meeting of some 200 traffic policemen gathered in a courtyard at 8 a.m., police Colonel Mohammed Saleh and Lieutenant Colonel Abdul-Salam Zibari said.
Another suicide car bomber also rammed into an Iraqi army checkpoint in Kirkuk, killing five soldiers and injuring three Monday evening, army and police officers said.
Also in the Kurdish areas, a suicide car bomber ripped through a convoy carrying a local security director, killing him and three of his bodyguards, said Anwar Kokoyei, a senior official of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan political party. The attack happened in Halabja, The AP reported.
Gunmen killed three members of the Kurdish Peshmerga militia near a camp in the town of Hit, 85 miles west of Baghdad, Dr. Muhanad Jawad said from the capital, where the bodies were brought.
Elsewhere, a U.S. soldier killed by a roadside bomb in northern Iraq. The soldier was hit by the bomb while on patrol near Tal Afar, 90 miles east of the Syrian border, the military said.
Meanwhile, an armed group claimed in a Web posting that its members killed a foreign contractor working for an American firm along with six of his Iraqi guards in an ambush near Ramadi, which is located west of Baghdad. The statement did not specify when the attack took place.
