Two adult Iranian Siamese twins, conjoined at the head, arrived in Singapore on Wednesday seeking out the same doctor who separated two Nepalese babies last year to perform the same operation on them.
Laleh and Ladan Birjani, who are qualified lawyers, were born with interlocked brains similar to Nepalese twins Ganga and Jamuna Shrestha who were separated some 19 months ago in a 97-hour operation.
Within hours of the 27-year-old Iranian women arriving in Singapore, specialists at Raffles Hospital began an intensive series of tests to see if they can be safely separated on, according to AFP.
The medical process is being supervised by Dr. Keith Goh, who led the surgical team, which parted the Nepalese babies in what neurosurgeons described as the most complex operation of its type to separate Siamese twins.
Doctors at the hospital are doing the initial tests for free and if they agree to go ahead with the operation, the fees for medicine and equipment - estimated at around 400,000 Singapore dollars (227,272 US dollars) will be waived, Raffles Hospital said. (Albawaba.com)
