Iran and Syria on Sunday stressed the need for settlement of Iran's nuclear case through diplomatic channels and holding talks with no precondition as well as preservation of Tehran's right to access nuclear fuel cycle.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad issued a joint statement before the Syrian leader end his official two-day visit to Tehran. According to IRNA, they also emphasized the need to probe Iran's peaceful nuclear activities by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
They said any discriminatory approach to nuclear rights for countries within frameworks of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) are unacceptable.
The two leaders stressed establishment of a Middle East region free from weapons of mass destruction and called on responsible international organizations to adopt immediate measures to fight against threats arising from Israel's nuclear arsenal for the sake of regional and international peace and security.
While in Tehran, al-Assad held separate meetings with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, Chairman of the Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani and Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki besides President Ahmadinejad.
