Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Hamid-Reza Asefi, on Sunday reiterated Iran's commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). According to IRNA, Asefi said "What is important to Iran is that we cannot accept the treaty to be used as a tool for political purposes."
He added Tehran believes it is acting on the basis of its responsibilities within the frameworks of the article of association of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Safeguards. "The world, however, should not act in a way that gives the impression that the NPT and the IAEA are being dealt with politically," he said.
Meanwhile, the London-based Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported US military experts are drawing up schemes for an attack on Iran as a last resort to stop Tehran from developing nuclear arms. The paper said Central Command and Strategic Command planners were "identifying targets, assessing weapon-loads and working on logistics for an operation."
The planners are reporting to the office of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld with a view to having a military option if diplomatic efforts fail.
