The second round of parliamentary elections in Iran will be held on May 5, state radio said Wednesday, quoting an official announcement by the interior ministry, Iran News Agency (IRNA) said.
"The second round will take place on Friday, May 5 in 52 constituencies," the announcement said.
The report confirmed that the ministry had reached an agreement with the elections control body, the Council of Guardians, which last week rejected a proposal that the second round be held on April 28, IRNA added.
The first round resulted in a sweeping victory for reformist supporters of President Mohammad Khatami, who overturned a conservative majority in the outgoing parliament.
The Council of Guardians announced Tuesday that it had validated the election of 185 candidates from the first round, and overturned nine. But the results for the 30 seats in the all-important constituency of Tehran are still in doubt, said AFP.
All but one of the Tehran seats were initially attributed to reformists headed by Khatami's brother Mohammad-Reza, but after a third recount the Guardians said there were significant discrepancies.
The second round will match candidates who failed to achieve 25 percent of the total votes cast in the first round - (Agencies)
