Referring to the recent remarks of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about Israel and the reaction of certain countries to them, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hamidreza Asefi on Sunday noted that Iran's position on the issue was quite clear.
Iran favours a referendum to be held with participation of Muslims, Jews, Chrisitians, Palestinians and Palestinian refugees, he added, according to IRNA. He explained that Tehran "is proposing a democratic process and if Israel thinks that such a process will endanger its existance, then this shows that it has problems with democratic procedues and that it should solve its problems."
Asefi also referred to the Italian foreign minister's remarks that he would not take part in a demonstration outside Iranian embassy in Rome in order to prevent any propable harm to Italian nationals residing in Iran. He said he was surprised with such remarks because they indicate "certain people have forgotten their positions because the literature they use by no means suits their position or the great nation of Italy."
