A military figure and at least 25 other people have been arrested for suspected electoral offences during the first round of presidential voting last week, the state-run news agency reported Thursday.
Some of the detainees were linked to distribution of CDs and other material, the Islamic Republic News Agency said, citing a statement by election overseers in the Interior Ministry. In addition, a group of senior religious authorities in the Islamic Republic of Iran issued a religious prohibition Wednesday for any abuse in Friday run-off election.
Tehran's hard-line mayor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Friday will face former president, Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani in Iran's first head-to-head presidential ballot.
Meanwhile, Iran's Minister of the Intelligence, Ali Younesi, and Minister of the Interior Mousavi Lari briefed the cabinet on the coming run-off. President Khatami's govenment reaffirmed call on all govermental institutes to avoid use of public funds from presidential campaigns.
