An Iranian man is to be blinded in one eye in line with the nation's strict Islamic law of retribution after putting out another man's eye in a traffic dispute, the press said Tuesday.

A Tehran court ordered the punishment for Gholamhossein Aryabakhshahyesh, 35, for jabbing 55-year-old Mohammad Ali Qorbani in the eye in a row over parking, the Entekhab paper said.

It said the younger man had parked his car in the middle of a Tehran street, blocking Qorbani who was on his way to a party with members of his family.

When Qorbani asked him to move the car, Aryabakhshahyesh became enraged and jabbed him in the eye with a stick, costing him his vision.

The Islamic law of retribution, often known as the "eye-for-an-eye" rule, is part of the Iranian penal code.

The publisher of a reformist newspaper has been jailed in connection with the publication of articles last year questioning the validity of the law - TEHRAN (AFP)
