Intel Corporation  unveiled two new platforms -- Intel® Viiv™ technology, a new brand, and Intel® Centrino® Duo mobile technology -- for a new generation of home PCs and laptops. The new platforms are aimed at advancing the emerging digital lifestyle at home, work, and on the go.
The two brands help create new ways for how people use personal entertainment and business information, when and where they need it and on a choice of devices or screens.  Entertainment PCs based on Intel Viiv (rhymes with “five”) technology1 make it easier for people to view, manage and share digital entertainment and information in the home. Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology delivers breakthrough capabilities to make entertainment truly mobile for people on the go and improves responsiveness and efficiency of mobile workers.
“Intel is focused on creating innovative computing platforms that usher in a new era of working, playing and living,” said Sam Al-Schamma, Intel’s General Manager in the GCC, “The Intel Viiv technology and Centrino Duo mobile technology platforms create new leaps in how people work and play and our efforts to work across multiple industries help ensure that there is content, software and devices available to take advantage of a new generation of uses and experiences.”
At the heart of the new platforms are Intel’s new, dual-core processors manufactured using the company’s leading 65nm process technology. They include the Intel® Core™ Duo processor that boasts a unique design with two processors in a package roughly the size of a large postage stamp, coupling new levels of performance with breakthrough energy-efficiency to inspire innovative laptop and PC designs. Intel Core Duo will power Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology and certain models of Intel Viiv technology.
Intel also introduced the Intel® Pentium® D processor (formerly codenamed “Presler”), its new, dual-core processor for desktop PCs that will power many models of Intel Viiv technology and can deliver increased performance for multitasking, multi-user and entertainment scenarios, including music downloads, photo and video editing and audio encoding.

Intel Platforms at Home, On the Go
With Intel Viiv technology, families interact with their PC similar to the way they operate a television by using a single remote control2. The platform includes the Microsoft Windows*  XP Media Center Edition 2005 operating system and media software allowing people to watch a movie or play a game while also downloading the latest music, all from one integrated system.
Intel Viiv platforms come in a choice of PC designs – including “all-in-one” hybrid PCs that look like televisions, thin consumer electronic and book-size form factors and tower desktop designs. PC manufacturers worldwide will introduce more than 80 systems based on the platform beginning today and continuing throughout the first quarter of 2006.
Because of Intel’s extensive work with the entertainment industry, people with Intel Viiv technology-based PCs can enjoy countless hours of the latest online entertainment services and applications on-demand. To date, Intel has announced it is working with more than 50 major companies worldwide to test and verify online content services and applications – from movies, music and television programs, to sports, games and family photos – to work with Intel Viiv technology. Each verified service, application and device will carry an identifier that reads, “Enjoy with Intel Viiv technology” to make them easier to find.
The platform has guaranteed support for a minimum 5.1, and up to 7.1 surround-sound for home theater-quality audio, for high-definition video, and the ability to instantly turn the system on and off with the touch of a button (after initial boot, when activated). With an optional TV tuner card, families can also record, pause and rewind live TV programs, and store them on the hard drive for later viewing. Later this year, Intel will add additional software features to the platform that will simplify the set-up of certain devices in a home network, and the ability to transfer entertainment from the Intel Viiv technology-based PC to verified networked devices, including digital TVs, DVD players, set-top boxes and wireless routers.
Intel Viiv technology platforms include a choice of powerful, dual core processors including the Intel Pentium D, Pentium Processor Extreme Edition and Intel Core Duo processors, as well as the Intel® 945, 955 or 975 Express Chipset families and the Intel® PRO/1000 PM or Intel® PRO/100 VE/VM network connection.
Whether for the family taking movies, music and games on vacation, or a business traveler always on the move, Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology delivers dramatic performance improvements (more than 70 percent3), while also reducing component power up to 28 percent3 over previous generations. The result enables increased system responsiveness and improved battery life in a wide variety of innovative laptop designs.
As an ultimate on-the-go, all-in-one entertainment device, Centrino Duo mobile technology features enhanced three-dimensional graphics (up to two times previous generations), and the option to view high-definition (HD) TV. When enabled with Intel® High Definition Audio, it also features up to 7.1 surround sound with support for Dolby* Digital. Using laptops based on Centrino Duo mobile technology, people can immerse themselves more completely in music, games and HD movies and TV, whether in the car, a coffee shop or on the plane.
The performance of the Centrino Duo mobile technology platform helps businesses to be more responsive and productive as a result of better multitasking performance and collaboration capabilities, including enabling voice and video over IP, and improved battery life. The platform supports Intel® Active Management technology and Intel® Virtualization technology, innovative silicon-based features for enhanced manageability and bolstered security.
The small size of the platform components of Centrino Duo mobile technology enables a wide variety of laptop sizes and innovative designs. The components also enable a 1.2 watt-average platform power savings relative to previous generations, making it more energy efficient.
The Centrino Duo mobile technology platform is comprised of the Intel Core Duo Processor with dual-core processing and the mobile Intel® 945 Express Chipset family. The
platform also includes the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection, Intel’s next- generation wireless network connection advancing WLAN performance of standard Wi-Fi networks, and supports enhanced features that make applications more aware, connected, and responsive, ultimately delivering a better mobile experience.
