India will be seeking the swift extradition of arrested Bombay crime lord Abu Salem from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), police officials said Thursday, adding that Salem had been plotting to blow up the Bombay police headquarters, according to AFP.
Abu Salem, a lieutenant of Bombay underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, was arrested Wednesday in Sharjah.
Salem and Ibrahim are wanted for masterminding a series of bombings in Bombay in 1993 that killed more than 300 people.
A top Bombay police official said a high-level police team was expected to fly to the UAE within the next two weeks to discuss extradition procedures.
Salem is wanted in connection with more than 35 criminal cases, including the 1993 bombings and several cases of blackmailing film stars and businesses, said the agency.
According to Indian press reports, Salem's name had figured during investigations into match-fixing allegations in cricket and he is also suspected to be behind the killing of audio-cassette mogul Gulshan Kumar in 1997 - Albawaba.com
