Lebanese Hizbollah fighters wounded two Israeli soldiers on Friday, and the Jewish state blamed Syria for the attack.
The attack had taken place Friday evening in the Shabaa Farms area on the border with Lebanon. The soldiers suffered light and moderate wounds, according to Haaretz. Hizbollah forces fired anti-tank missiles and mortars on military positions in the Israeli-occupied area.
In response to the Hizbollah attack, the Israeli air force struck targets near the border "from where the firing on the Israeli positions took place," an Israeli army spokesman said.
Reuters quoted witnesses as saying that Hizbollah opened fire on three Israeli posts in the 25km area and the occupied Golan Heights. The witnesses said Israeli artillery responded with shelling near the town of Kfar Shouba on the Lebanese border.
In a statement, Hizbollah said it had also attacked Israeli forces who came to support the positions under fire.
"When an Israeli Merkava tank attempted to enter Rweisat Al Alam to back up the post under fire, the mujahideen attacked it with the appropriate missiles, keeping them from supporting the position in question," the statement said.
In April, Hezbollah killed an Israeli soldier in a missile attack on a tank in the region, prompting an Israeli strike on a Syrian radar station deep in Lebanon that killed three Syrian soldiers.
The resistance movement also captured three Israeli soldiers in Shabaa Farms during a carefully orchestrated raid last October, as well as an Israeli reserve colonel it says is an agent for the Mossad – Albawaba.com
