A top reformist cleric in Iran has called for sex education to be introduced into society, according to Entekhab paper.

In its Saturday edition, the paper said Ayatollah Yusef Sanei denied that sex education could lead to the promotion of depravity, saying "it is vital to guarantee society's health.

"We should not ignore this serious issue only under the illusion that education on sexual issues may destroy the decency of society," Sanei was quoted as saying.

"There are other factors that spread moral corruption in society, but sex education is aimed at preserving society's health", he added.

"Today we live in an open society in which the causes of corruption and health are distinguished from one another", Sanei explained.

Meanwhile, the Jomhuri-e-eslami paper criticized Sanei for his comments.

It said "sex education has negative consequences for the society, today even the Western countries are dissatisfied with education in sexual matters and have banned them partly." (Albawaba.com)
