An activist at the Islamic Resistance Hamas movement was in serious condition in hospital after being shot Monday in Balata refugee camp in the West Bank city of Nablus, reports said.

Mahmud el-Madini, 25, was hit by three bullets in the chest fired from an Israeli army post on a hilltop overlooking the refugee camp to the east of Nablus, said Haaretz newspaper n its online edition.

Military sources told the paper that Madini is suspected of involvement in the bombing attack in Netanya last month that injured at least 35 Israelis.

Residents, meanwhile, told AFP that they suspected that Madini, who was shot as he was walking from the camp's mosque to his grocery shop, had been targeted by the army in a deliberate assassination attempt.

Haaretz said that Madini had been jailed twice by Israel under administrative detention, without charge or trial.

The Palestinians have accused Israel of killing in pinpoint strikes around 20 activists suspected of waging anti-Israeli attacks during the Intifada.

Last week, Israeli helicopter gunships fired missiles at the car of Massoud Ayyad, an officer in Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Force 17 unit.

Israel said Ayyad, who was killed in the attack had twice fired mortar shells at the Jewish settlement of Netzarim in the Gaza Strip – Albawaba.com
