Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon only believes in using force to achieve his political objectives, the deputy chief of the Egyptian Shura Council foreign relations committee, Mohammed Bassiouni, said Wednesday, quoted by Al Messa Arabic daily.

Bassiouni, a former ambassador to Israel, added that Sharon used force in order to avoid reaching a peaceful agreement with the Palestinian Authority which would enable Palestinians to “reclaim their stolen rights.”

“The US and Europe should be persuaded to play a more active role in order to achieve peace in the region,” Bassiouni said.

The envoy was withdrawn form Tel Aviv last year as a protest against Israel’s “excessive use of force” to quell the Palestinian uprising against 34 years of occupation. He then retired and was appointed to the consultative council.
