An Egyptian court will examine next Thursday a case filed by eight members of the opposition party Al Wafd against the party leader, Noman Goma’h, demanding that the results of this month’s Wafd higher committee elections be thrown out.
The Cairo-based Al Messa newspaper cited the party members as saying that the elections were illegal because of various violations of election procedures and pressure put on them by the party leader.
Among the eight plaintiffs is a woman from the Sirajiddin family, the founder of the modern Wafd Party.
The party has faced crisis after crisis since Noman Goma’h became leader.
Critics say he has clamped down on his opponents within the party, including the chief of the party’s parliamentary committee in a previous session, Yassin Sirajiddin; two members of the current council, Ayman Noor and Mohammed Farid Hassanain; and the former editor in chief of the party newspaper, Said Abdel Khaleq – Albawaba.com
