Syrian president Hafez Al-Asad is to hold talks with Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in the Egyptian city of Alexandria Monday on the Middle East peace process and the situation in Lebanon, international Arab daily al-Sharq al-Awsat reported Sunday.
Other Arab newspapers Sunday were predicting that Mubarak will host Assad for a meeting in Egypt sometime in the coming days. The two have not met for the last 18 months.
The international Arabic daily Al Hayat quoted Egyptian sources as saying the meeting would take place in the coming days.
A year ago, the two countries' relations became strained after Syria refused to take part in a regional summit that Egypt wanted after the election of the new Israeli government, said Israeli day Ha’aretz.
The Egyptian-Syrian summit comes in the wake of talks held by Hosni Mubarak in Cairo last week with king Abdullah of Jordan, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and Lebanese President Emile Lahoud
Asad visited Cairo last in November 1998, and his expected visit to Alexandria Monday will be his first since being elected as president for the fifth term last February, noted the paper.
Asad and Mubarak will also discuss the situation on the Lebanese track after the Israeli decision to withdraw from south Lebanon in July – (Several Sources)
