On January 2nd, the Cairo-based Al-Akhbar daily published an editorial regarding its political projections for the New Year. The state-owned daily predicts that year 2002 will not be better than last year. The reason, according to the Egyptian newspaper, is that the problems that surfaced in 2001 and before are still unresolved. Additionally, the ramifications of the 11th of September attacks in New York and Washington remain unsettled.

The oldest and foremost international problem - Palestine - remains without answer. The editorial wrote “no one can predict, even at this point, that a just and comprehensive solution to this issue is near.” Thus, the problem of terrorism will not be solved and will not end, Al-Akhbar suggested.

Another anxious issue that is coincidental with the Palestinian problem is Kashmir. Asia has seen two major wars between the nuclear neighbors, India and Pakistan. A third war nearly erupted a few days ago, indicated Al-Akhbar.

Palestinian Daily: U.S. Should Solve Palestinian Problem

For its part, the Palestinian al-Quds daily has written that year 2002 has arrived amid regional and global circumstances that are continually changing, making it difficult to predict what the state of the world would be by the year's end.

According to the Jerusalem-based daily, the United States comes out of 2001 as the only superpower dominating the world following the strong military blows it dealt the Taliban and Osama bin Laden network al-Qaeda. However, the daily contends the blind American bias to Israel has led to depriving the Palestinian people of their legal rights and prolonged for no reason Palestinian suffering.

The outset of year 2002 indicates the total US hegemony of the world. The United States can do whatever it likes and classify states as terrorist, or give them good behavior certificates that secure for them all kinds of inducements and assistance.

In 2002, asserts al-Quds, the US approach to the Palestinian issue should change and put an end to the Israeli settlement and occupation, and lead to the establishment of a fully independent Palestinian state. If this issue remains unanswered, it has the potential to explode and threaten global peace and security, concludes al-Quds. (Albawaba.com)
