The Egyptian government on Saturday called for an immediate halt to the escalating conflict in the Palestinian Territories, and a resumption of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, reported Al Ahram daily.
During its weekly meeting, the cabinet asked for “immediate resumption of peace negotiations based on the Sharm El Sheikh agreements and previous signed agreements.”
It also called for an immediate halt to the bloodshed in the Palestinian Territories, which have claimed the lives of hundreds of Palestinian civilians, said the paper.
It also condemned Israel’s excessive use of force against the Palestinians.
Within the same context, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak made telephone calls in a bid to calm the situation in the Middle East, said the paper.
Mubarak called US President George W. Bush, Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Gerhard Shroeder, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and other Arab leaders, asking them to “interfere” and pressure Israel to stop its aggression against the Palestinians, said the paper – Albawaba.com
