A research-based, postgraduate university in Knowledge Village, Dubai, is receiving high numbers of applicants from Oman, following a strong response at the Gulf Higher Education Exhibition (GHEDEX) this week.
The British University in Dubai (BUiD) offers a diverse range of range of scholarships for Masters Programmes beginning in September 2006, and is actively looking for interested students interested in taking up the opportunities from across the region.
BUiD provides postgraduate degree programmes and Continuing Professional Development programmes in a range of disciplines, and has already received a significant number of applications from Oman. Executives at the University are confident that the participation in GHEDEX will help to further stimulate the high levels of interest.
“In 2005, there were 1,150 Omani students who elected to study in the UK, primarily because of the quality of the education and the range of life experiences on offer. One of the things we’re looking to do at GHEDEX is to demonstrate that the same style and quality of postgraduate education is available within the region,” said David Lock, BUiD’s registrar and acting chief executive.
“Our courses have been developed to support specific sectors in the Middle East, such as engineering, IT and education, where there is a strong demand for further education and development, so understandably we encounter a great deal of interest within Oman,” he added.
BUiD degree programmes are based on similar international quality programmes that are offered in its partner universities, which include the University of Edinburgh, the University of Manchester, the University of Birmingham, Cardiff University and the Cass Business School of City University, London.
The University was established to facilitate access to world class education, training and research in the Middle East. It offers cutting-edge education and research in key disciplines, including IT, engineering, banking and finance, the Built Environment and education.

The founders of the University are the Al Maktoum Foundation, the Dubai Development and Investment Authority, Rolls-Royce, the British Business Group and the National Bank of Dubai. The University is managed by a provisional council under the chairmanship of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
