Following a recent review of their Ramadan activities and social messaging during the holy month, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) will now organise a concerted campaign to become socially responsible corporate citizens.

DEWA had organised a range of special activities to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan, under the theme of conservation, education and benevolence. The activities focused on supporting charitable causes for the less fortunate in society, promoting water and electricity conservation and other environmental issues, educational programmes, Islamic lectures and Iftar celebrations.

Amal Koshak, Deputy Manager, Demand Management at DEWA commented, “DEWA is a socially responsible organisation and having reviewed our activities to support the local community during the holy month of Ramadan, we found clear parallels could be drawn with sound corporate social responsibility. Due to the success of our Ramadan campaign we are now committed to becoming socially responsible corporate citizens.”

In coordination with Dubai’s Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing (DTCM) some two thousand students were invited to the Rashid Auditorium in Rashid Hospital. They listened to Islamic lectures on the true meaning of Ramadan, and were taught how to follow Islam’s teachings regarding conservation.

DEWA also designed a seasonal brochure which was distributed to both their employees and customers, highlighting advice on fasting and environmental issues from an Islamic perspective. The brochures also summarised the array of activities taking place throughout Ramadan, to gain employee participation.

In Al Twar area, in coordination with DEWA, the DTCM erected a special children’s Ramadan Tent with large screen TVs and DVD players. A corner of the tent was reserved to educate children about Zamzam water and there was also a gardening corner and a ‘detective’ corner for conservation awareness.

In association with the Human Appeal International (HAI), a Non-Governmental charitable organisation, DEWA underscored HAI’s goals for sustainable economic and social development through various relief and development programmes. DEWA also supported HAI’s drive to improve the quality of life for underprivileged communities through education, health and social development.

“Ramadan is a time for reflection and it is gratifying to know that not only have we raised awareness of those less fortunate than ourselves, but we have also highlighted the need to carry on supporting the community we serve throughout the year,” added Koshak.
