China has offered 50,000 US dollars to help the survivors of last week's deadly earthquake in Iran in which over 200 people were killed, state media reported early Thursday.

The grant was made on behalf of the Red Cross Society of China by ambassador to Iran Sun Bigan, Xinhua said.

Sun also conveyed his sympathies and those of the Chinese people to Mostafa Mohaghegh, director general of the International Affairs Department of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, Xinhua said.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Jiang Zemin has already sent condolences to his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Khatami, expressing his belief that under the leadership of the Iranian government, the Iranian people would overcome the difficulties caused by the quake and rebuild their homes.
