The US assistant secretary of state for Near East affairs, William Burns, is expected Monday in Yemen, whose relations with Washington have been strained by terrorism, an official source said.

The same source said Thursday that bilateral cooperation and the regional situation would top Burns' agenda during his stop in Sanaa, according to AFP.

Burns' tour of the region has already taken him to Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon.

On June 17, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) withdrew from Yemen its team investigating last October's bombing of the USS Cole in the southern port city of Aden in which 17 US sailors were killed, citing a "very real and credible threat" to its investigators.

On June 9, the US embassy in Sanaa was closed to the public due to what Washington called terrorist threats, although Yemeni press reports said that it was due to reopen – Albawaba.com
