Britain's special envoy for Sudan has arrived in the capital of Khartoum for discussions with the government on ending the country's 19-year-old civil war, a high-ranking Sudanese official said Monday.
Presidential Peace Advisor Ghazi Salah Eddin Atabani said that Alan Goulty, who arrived late Sunday, had brought no specific initiative or proposal, but rather intended to acquaint himself with the government's stance.
Goulty's visit was made to "continue efforts to bring closer the viewpoints of the (Sudanese) government and the rebel movement, in compliance with a British pledge to push the peace process forward by creating a conducive atmosphere," Atabani said.
Goulty was expected to meet with several Sudanese officials before travelling on to Nairobi, where Khartoum and rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) began five weeks of talks on June 17, according to AFP.
The British envoy already held talks with Sudanese President Omar el-Beshir and opposition leaders in Khartoum in March. (Albawaba.com)
