Former Israeli justice minister Yossi Beilin met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher on Sunday in Cairo, where they discussed ways to end the worsening crisis in the occupied Palestinian territories, reports said.
The visit comes as part of a campaign by Beilin, a mastermind of the Oslo peace process, "to put an end to the events in Palestine and re-launch the peace process," an Egyptian Foreign Ministry source told AFP.
Beilin, while still justice minister, attended peace talks with the Palestinians in Taba, Egypt in January, little more than week before Ariel Sharon was elected prime minister.
Within the same context, Maher told reporters Sunday that Egypt would intensify its contacts with the concerned parties to halt “Israel’s provocative policies against the Palestinians,” Al Ahram daily quoted him as saying.
“Egypt supports Palestinian President Yasser Arafat’s urgent appeals to world leaders, asking for an immediate intervention to force Israel to withdraw from Orient House and other Palestinian institutions,” he told reporters.
