Syrian President Bashar al-Assad called for Palestinian unity in a meeting with leaders of the 10  Palestinian factions based in Damascus, one of the groups told AFP.

Assad noted "the importance of Palestinian national unity and remaining committed to the Palestinian principles" at the meeting on Saturday, said the representative of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Maher Taher told AFP that the Syrian leader gave assurances that his country would "support the Palestinian people with all its capacity to recover their rights".

The faction leaders expressed their commitment to the "right of return" of Palestinian refugees to the territories occupied by Israel, according to Taher.

Khaled Meshaal, political chief of Hamas, was among those who took part, along with Taher, the Islamic Jihad deputy, Ziad Nakhala, and Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine chief Nayef Hawatmeh.
