Palestinian President Yasser Arafat traveled Saturday to the West Bank city of Ramallah for the first time since the Intifada broke out in late September, an AFP reporter said.
Arafat, who held talks in Amman on Saturday morning, traveled by a Jordanian helicopter to Ramallah, where he reportedly may meet Sunday with US Secretary of State Colin Powell.
Arafat said after a meeting with Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb that he will call for the United States to ensure the enforcement of peace deals reached between Israel and the Palestinians when he holds his first meeting with Powell on Sunday.
"We expect the US administration, which is the principal sponsor of the peace process, will ensure what was agreed to between us and the Israelis at Sharm el-Sheikh, in Taba or elsewhere," Arafat said.
"The essential thing is to implement all the agreements that have been concluded in the presence and with the signature" of the Americans, Arafat said, without being more specific.
US and Palestinian officials had previously said Powell will meet with Arafat in Gaza City, where Arafat has mostly been based during the Intifada when he has not been travelling abroad.
Since the Intifada broke out, Arafat's only previous visit to the West Bank have been to Bethlehem, the traditional birthplace of Jesus, for Christmas masses.
