Palestinian President Yasser Arafat held talks Tuesday night with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, reported the official Palestinian news agency, WAFA.
Arafat and Maher discussed the need to "coordinate Egyptian and Palestinian efforts to put an end to the Israeli aggression."
The Palestinian president is scheduled to meet Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Wednesday in the northern seaside resort of Borg Al Arab, near Alexandria, to gather support for the holding of an Arab summit on the deteriorating regional situation.
Arafat is set to visit Italy August 1-2, to meet with Italian leaders and Pope John Paul.
Arafat was in Tunis Monday where he held talks with President Zein El Abideen bin Ali on the latest developments in the region.
He made a brief visit to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. His tour also includes Algeria and Jordan.
Al Ahram Arabic daily quoted Maher as saying Monday that Mubarak would be briefed by the Palestinian president on his evaluation of the Middle East situation and Palestinian measures to face ongoing Israeli provocation.
The official Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA, quoted Arafat’s aide, Nabil Abu Rudeinah, as saying that the tour was to push for an extraordinary Arab summit to face the escalation of Israeli violence against the Palestinians.
