Flagrant encroachments on Al Aqsa Mosque and Al Haram Al Sharif in Jerusalem were condemned at a pan-Arab meeting yesterday.

Bahrain's Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa attended the meeting.

The Arab delegations discussed steps to counter Israeli assaults on Islamic and Christian religious shrines in occupied Jerusalem.

They criticised Israel's repressive policies and slammed the country for attacking religious sites and curbing the freedom of worship.

Israeli authorities were also rapped for arresting the Palestinian Grand Mufti, Mohammad Hussein, and continuing assaults on Muslims seeking to pray at the Al Haram Al Sharif.

The delegations welcomed the Unesco decision to set up a fact-finding commission to investigate the "untenable situation" in Al Quds and other Israeli actions since the occupation of the city in 1967.

The ambassadors also decided to task the Arab group in New York to seek an UN resolution condemning the mindless assaults on Palestinians.

They appealed to Arab and Islamic organisations to fund projects in support of Al Quds.

In a statement yesterday, the delegations affirmed the status of East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestinian State.
