Annan to get UN report on Hariri killing

A United Nations report on the assassination of former Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri will be released Thursday. This may lead to UN action against Syria.

German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis, the head of the UN probe into Hariri killing, will hand over the report to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, a UN spokesman said. Later, the report will be forwarded Friday to the UN Security Council.

Syria and its political allies in Lebanon have been accused of being involved in the slaying.

The Syrian regime has strongly denied the allegations. Just on Wednesday Syrian President Bashar Al Assad told a German weekly that his country was in no way involved in the killing. “We are 100 percent innocent,” Assad told Die Zeit weekly newspaper.
