Amnesty International has resumed its activities in Algeria after a stoppage that lasted for nearly a decade as a result of violence in the country, reported Kuwaiti news agency (KUNA)on Wednesday.
The agency said a three-member Amnesty delegation arrived in the country today signaling the international agency’s resumption of activities.
The team is expected to ponder human rights conditions in the country in light of violence, ongoing since 10 years ago.
The team is due to hold talks with opposition leaders, human rights activists, journalists and students.
It was still unknown whether the authorities would allow the team, expected to stay in the country till may 13, to contact leaders of the Islamic salvation front and inquire about political prisoners.
The mission is the first of its kind since 1991. the authorities had rejected requests by the organization to dispatch teams because of its condemnation of the human rights record of the country – Albawaba.com
