Egyptian Prosecutor General Maher Abdel Wahed has ordered the former governor of Giza, Maher Al Jundi, to appear along with seven others before the state higher security court on charges of bribery, abuse of authority and embezzlement, according to Egyptian press reports Wednesday.
The accused could face a penalty of life imprisonment.
The prosecutor general accused the former governor of requesting and accepting personal gifts and cash money from the other defendants.
The alleged bribes amounted to one million pounds, and were said to have been in exchange for allocating 130 acres of land on the Egypt/Alexandria desert road to a private company.
The press secretary of the former minister of culture allegedly acted as an intermediary in the deal.
The prosecutor general confirmed at a press conference Tuesday that he had released the former governor on bail of 5,000 pounds.
“There are certain considerations that the prosecutor general abides by, but in the end, all are equal before the law and no person who is accused can escape questioning,” he added – Albawaba.com
