ALBAWABA - Israeli media reported that the Israeli army opened fire on a suspect near the Gaza buffer zone, only to later discover that he was an Israeli soldier attempting suicide.
According to Yedioth Ahronoth, Israeli forces responded to an alert about an individual shouting "Allahu Akbar" near the border. Assuming a potential threat, the soldiers fired at him, injuring him. Upon closer inspection, they realized he was a former Israeli soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and war-related injuries. The soldier was transferred to a hospital for medical treatment.
This incident comes amid rising reports of non-combat military casualties within the Israeli army. Israeli sources recently confirmed that 76 soldiers had died in non-operational incidents since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023.
Military data shows that 71 soldiers were killed in Gaza and 5 in Lebanon, with 30 of these deaths attributed to "friendly fire."
Additionally, 26 soldiers lost their lives due to operational mishaps and mishandling of ammunition, 6 were killed in breaches of firing safety protocols, and 7 died from accidental Israeli airstrikes or artillery fire, while 2 were killed in a crane collapse.
The number of wounded personnel has also risen significantly, with 1,639 officers and soldiers injured in operational incidents on the Gaza front.
